چکیده

prolonged, this treatment leads to a considerable error in the DL value. In order to eliminate this error a correction factor of the inspiration time was newly introduced to obtain the effective inspiration time. The correction factor was a function of the ratio of the residual capacity to the total alveolar gas volume and the ratio of DL to the flow rate of inspiration. A nomogram was made for convenience to obtain the effective inspiration time.

Effect of lung inflation on pulmonary diffusing capacity at rest and exercise.

Steady state measurements of the diffusing capacity of the lung are made at operational lung volume, whereas measurements by the breath-holding method are customarily made at full inspiration. The effect of lung inflation on diffusing capacity must be taken into account before the steady state and breath-holding methods can be validly compared. At rest the single breath diffusing capacity of th...

An analysis of factors affecting the measurement of pulmonary diffusing capacity by the single breath method.

The diffusing capacity of the lungs (DL) is defined as the rate of a gas transferred, divided by the difference in the mean partial pressure of that gas across the alveolar-capillary "membrane." Direct determination of the diffusing capacity for oxygen (DLo2) has been limited by technical difficulties and by the problematical calculation of the mean oxygen pressure on the capillary side of the ...

Pulmonary diffusing capacity: a comparison of breath-holding and steady state methods using carbon monoxide.

Three methods are in current use for measuring the diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DL). Two of these are steady state methods, and they differ in the methods used to calculate the mean alveolar carbon monoxide tension. Filley, MacIntosh and Wright (1) calculate the alveolar Pco indirectly, assuming the physiological dead space for carbon dioxide to be the same as that for c...

Single-breath diffusing capacity of NO independent of inspiratory NO concentration in rabbits.

Pulmonary diffusing capacity of NO (Dl NO) was determined by performing single-breath experiments on six anesthetized paralyzed supine rabbits, applying inspiratory concentrations of NO (Fi NO) within a range of 10 parts per million (ppm) ≤ Fi NO ≤ 800 ppm. Starting from residual volume, the rabbit lungs were inflated by 50 ml of a NO-nitrogen-containing indicator gas mixture. Breath-holding ti...

Pulmonary function in status asthmaticus: effect of therapy.

In 11 patients with bronchial asthma, lung volumes, FEV1.0, PaO2, and lung diffusing capacity (single breath CO method) were measured in status asthmaticus and after recovery. Ventilatory capacity improved following therapy. The improvement was associated with a rise in vital capacity and a fall in residual volume, but the total lung capacity might either decrease, increase or remain unchanged....
